KEEPING KIDS SAFE IN CARS? WE CAN HELP.

CHILD SAFETY SEAT INSTALLATION REQUEST

The University of Connecticut Police Department is pleased to provide the UConn and Mansfield community with officers who are certified as a Child Passenger Safety Technician. These officers are available to assist both expecting and veteran parents with their child car seat installation needs.

Appointments are typically scheduled during the day and are necessary as the technician’s schedule regularly changes. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 860-486-2375 or by completing the Child Safety Seat Installation Request Form below. After the request is received our technician will call you back to schedule your appointment as soon as he is available. Emergency (non-scheduled) installation/inspections will be handled on a case by case basis.

For additional information, you can send an email to: PDStartTeam@uconn.edu.

What can you expect when having your car seat checked?

After being greeted and asked to fill out light paperwork, the technician will inspect your seat while checking to see if it’s expired or recalled. The officer will then check to see if the seat properly fits your child. If necessary, they will adjust harness straps to fit your child before the installation occurs. Then, they will install your seat making sure to teach and answer questions you may have as they install. The technicians will focus on walking you through the installation, to ensure you know how to install the seat safely on your own.

What are the Child Passenger Safety Recommendations?

  • Babies should be kept rear facing until they are two years old or meet the maximum height or weight limit for their car seat when it is rear facing.
  • Toddlers must be in a car seat and should remain the car seat until they reach the weight or height limit of their car seat (usually 40 pounds or more).
  • Children should ride in a car sear or booster until they reach 7 years old AND 60 pounds (they must meet both requirements). Children who ride in a booster seat must use a lap and shoulder belt.
  • Children, tweens and teens must be in a seat belt whenever they ride in a vehicle.
Children should ride in the back seat until they are 13 years old.

Requests must be submitted 1 week before date of the installation and are filled based on availability of department personnel.
